I'd argue that animals can naturally differentiate between bonding for reproductive purposes (exclusive to mixed-sex activity) and bonding for pleasure (open to any kind of union/sexual activity).
But I heard one of my friends say that they only mate together because the scent of the female animals rub off on the male and attracts other males. I've been wondering if this is proven anywhere or if she's just talking out her ass.
