It was really hip to hate on Christina at the time. Just like it's very hip to hate on Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Kardashian/Lohan/Hilton or MIley... even though the GP actually has no idea what's going on with them nor do they care. She's surprisingly healing her image, something that I thought she'd never be able to do.
I often held predrinking parties at my apartment since my college was stupidly close to club district and since I picked the music, I'd often chit chat with people about new albums. Upon being asked, everyone would tell me "that new Aguilera album is just a copy of Lady Gaga's album, she's so desperate, the whole thing is tragic", which is really amusing to me since I'd often play tracks like Glam, Desnudate, Vanity, I hate Boys, Monday Morning, Woohoo and they'd bop away week after week in a buzz and singalong without actually realizing it was Xtina. I actually feared telling people that they were Christina songs because they'd always force me to change the song when NMT came on, "play some real lady gaga bitch, **** xtina unless it's Dirrty!"
The Gaga comparisons were very funny though. Especially the Bad Romance comparisons since they didn't realize that NMT was a blatant homage to a combination of two Madonna videos, which Christina said herself. People literally had no idea what they were talking about and were actually being unoriginal parrots as they ragged on someone for copying... the wrong video. It's amusing because it would actually be a legitimate point if they were more cultured musically...
It's not the greatest album, but everyone had an opinion about it. Most people I heard from had no idea what they were even bashing & just circlejerked over one criticism. That is not the sign of critical thinking. If you're just repeating something you heard somewhere else, your criticisms are fickle and unfair. I think it was unfairly bashed when it came out. People are easing up on it a lot though, I've heard "I'm late... but Bionic is actually pretty good" so many times over the past year alone. Can you think of any other album on ATRL that gets this kind of feedback years after it's release? ARTPOP is next.
