Maleficent opened to an estimated $70 million NA and $170 million WW
To all the naysayers: Maleficent opened to an estimated $70 million this weekend and takes the top spot at the box office. It's obvious Maleficent reigned supreme this weekend and isn't the box office bomb some were hoping for. Maleficent is now poised for a North American box office total above $200 million. It's also Angelina Jolie's biggest opening weekend ever, so she is nowhere near losing her star power, as some like to claim. The film got an 'A' CinemaScore and got reviews singling out Angelina Jolie's performance as "delightful", "magnificent" and "captivating".
Maleficent also made big bucks overseas gathering $100 million from other markets, putting it's worldwide total at $170 million after only one weekend. Big markets like China and Japan are still to come, where it will open in June and July respectively.
La Jolie is now undoubtedly Queen of Hollywood AND the Box Office.
