Fair enough, but just as there are many X-Men characters, there are also many non-X-Men Marvel characters that the general public knows nothing about and still knows nothing about. I doubt the general public would know anything about Iron Man or Black Widow if Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe didn't keep stuffing those characters in our face. So, singling out "X-Men" seems a bit of a moot point. But the word "X-Men" is definitely more famous and more popular than any non-X-Men Marvel character, regardless of whether or not you know all the individual X-Men characters.

Good point.
X-Men and the Avengers are sort of like a Britney/Christina or Backstreet Boys/Nsync type comparison. Both are very popular in their own right, and both have their strengths and weaknesses. Example, everyone and their dog knows Iron Man, yet the Avengers defiantly has a more family friendly image than the X Men franchise, which is both a pro and a con.
