OMG! I'm crying!!! I just finished it, all the awards to Matt Bomber!

He was fantastic in this. Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts were ok but Matt was the standout.

It's so crazy to think about this going on today, the images of sick patients scared the hell out of me. I always use protection and this just reinforced it even more. It's so sad that these men die so young and their partner has to watch them die.

Want to see this and cry all the time... PERFECT!!!! Matt is my man and always will be

I don't know if I'm in the mood to cry, or even if I will cry given how I feel rn

I was honestly slightly disappointed.

The performances were stellar, but Ryan Murphy's direction turned many sentimental moments trite, as I suspected it would.

The screenplay also took quite a few detours in lines from the original play and even some small plot-points that slowed down the pacing and again, turned some of the film into a very surface-level, cliched experience.

Many powerful moments with some of the best work in many of these actor's careers made up for much of that, fortunately.

A B- from me.

Currently an hour in and I've yet to be moved/cry.

I hope this doesn't mean I won't find The Fault In Our Stars moving

This. I feel like he's not authentically capturing the early 80s. You can feel it's the same director who did Nip/Tuck and Glee.

Should have got Gus Van Sant.

Julia Roberts sucked, Mark Ruffalo was decent.

My biggest issue was that it felt like a play that had just been translated onto screen. It was an ensemble cast and there were so many scenes set with 2 people or a small group of central characters in a room. HIV/AIDS was an epidemic. The benefit of a film is that it can show all this, where a play can't. They could have shown proper news reports, more outdoor scenes, more scenes showing New York City in 1981. It all just felt like a play on screen.

August: Osage Country did too. But the thing with that play-to-film adaptation was that they lived in rural Oklahoma with no neighbours. The isolation was almost a character in itself. But 'The Normal Heart' just felt very short of supporting characters. It was all ensemble and you didn't get to see the greater picture, which I would have found fascinating.

Obviously it's written from Larry Kramer's perspective (the writer) as it's his story, and in the early years when it was being swept under the rug, I'm sure he did have a lot of one-on-one conversations with people, and conversations with a whole bunch of people in a room...but because it was a film they should have captured the greater scheme of things. Like I said before, 'Milk' had a limited amount of characters, with lots of conversations in closed rooms, but Gus Van Sant did a way better job of capturing what it was like to be gay in the late 70s/early 80s.

I had trouble watching the scene of the mother carrying her dead son wrapped in plastic bags into the car.
