After monopolising pop music in 2013, Katy Perry failed to secure a place on Forbes' 'Most Powerful Women' list, right after reports of an 87% attendance at the opening night of the reasonably priced Prismatic Tour.
Moreover, even the global behemoth - Roar - could not propel PRISM's first week sales across the world past any sales barrier that may be indicative of any form of hype or excitement. Even in comparison with other albums released by artists derided as being 'commercially inferior' around a similar time:
US:
UK:
Bangerz: 270,000
Bangerz: 30,759
ARTPOP: 258,000
ARTPOP: 65,608
PRISM: 286,000
PRISM: 53,827
The disparity between the digital queen and her 'subjects' is not all that apparent. Even though the sales margins may have increased since then, why did the most important week of the album's release cycle fail to incite excitement?
My question is that, once the hits run out, will Katy have anything left to her name? Does she lack the fundamental, innate power that any superstar would have (even at the prime of her career) to place her firmly in stratospheric levels of success?
No. Despite first week sales, PRISM has also sold over 200k more than ARTPOP/Bangerz in the UK. And despite only having 87% attendance, her UK date still grossed over $1m (which is an average of Ł87.5 ($150) per ticket, which isn't that 'reasonably priced' in the UK).
She is just there to me. Always has been, always will be. She is never hot or the "it girl" because there is always someone else blocking her and taking over that spot. It is never her.
Shes a good/great popstar but if she wants to be seen as a powerful icon or something of that sort, shes going to need to push the envelope and I hope she does because she has the potential and the spotlight is on her in terms of pop music. This is coming from a stan of hers
She just goes by the hit formula, catchy singles + cute image + massive airplay deals = hits = increasing album sales.
There's nothing else to her, no personality, no controversy, no message.
