The Beyhive loves and misses no opportunity to claim Beyoncé changed the game with her self-titled album. Some of them even go as far as saying it had more impact than Thriller itself. They like to claim it is because of the surprise release and/or for it being a visual album; in both cases Beyoncé followed and copied, never leaded.

ODDSAC is a visual album created by the american band Animal Collective since 2006, 7 years before Beyoncé "had the idea". TVOTR did the same in 2011. And even artists outside of anglo-markets such as Miguel Bosé, a spanish music icon did the same in 2005 with his album Velvetina. So Beyoncé did absolutely nothing new, she just borrowed ideas. x 5 months later BEYONCÉ is struggling to stay inside the charts and has failed to influence other major pop stars to do surprise releases. Streaming the whole album days before the release on iTunes has actually become the thing to do, acts seem to refuse to be influenced by BEYONCÉ.


Now with all the hype gone, since it's no longer inside the top 40 of the best selling albums worldwide atm.

Madonna hasn't released anything and she has been hyping the album since last year on Instagram. Skrillex streamed the album a week before its release, and Coldplay's album had a release date set. So where exactly does the BEYONCÉ impact relies?

More albums have been released in the traditional way since BEYONCÉ's release so she hasn't changed the game, period. Acts still prefer to have traditional releases, maybe BEYONCÉ's front-loaded success stopped other people from opting for a surprise release. Most people would prefer longevity over front-loaded sales, sounds logical.
