He actually leaked California Gurls. It wasn't supposed to be the first single, but the leak made Capitol release it. He basically triggered the #1 effect.
This is why I hated Lady Gaga back then. People were saying she revolutionized pop music when she only had one hit (which was frankly a very generic song). It's very unfair. People also used to think she'd be around for 20 years like Madonna, but really she had a US career on the level of Ashanti's (which is still very good, but nowhere near what people were expecting).
I think her record label had a really extravagant promotion campaign for her. They spent the last half of 2008 making fake accounts on forums, etc. saying how amazing she was, then eventually real people started believing it.
I find her to be highly annoying already. She is over-hyped here on ATRL, her first live performance was miserable, and her single hasn't even peaked anywhere high on Billboard. Where is all this BS coming from? Her album is named "Fame?" LMAO.

Mazen predicted "Kesha" being an IT GIRL as well back then, long ago when Tik Tok was just a surfaced DEMO That member has psychic powers! Miss him/her/it. I bet one would resurface when Norah Jones/Madonna releases new music
