My school has the same policy.
If you want to be valedictorian or salutatorian then you need to attend the institution from grade 9-12.

Anyway, that's a very interesting policy. If my school had it, the most recent graduating class would have had both a different valedictorian and a different salutatorian. It's very odd that it isn't a clear policy though.

Even disregarding the allegations of racism, it's a stupid policy. Grades and GPA can be transferred from the old institution and weighted properly after the fact. Don't punish a kid who had no control over moving in the middle of High School but still came out ahead of everyone else thanks to hard work.

This tbh. Also, at the people ignoring the last part that says they can choose not to allow someone to be valedictorian "at their discretion". That's probably where the racism claims are coming from. Also, the fact that the school can't even produce the written terms that they claim to be using to deny him valedictorian. It all seems a little fishy. But hopefully it gets resolved for him.

Shouldn't we wait to label this as racism till we know the races of the ex-salutatorian, the new salutatorian and the new valedictorian? Like talk about jumping the gun and making this a race issue.

My school had a similar policy. It isn't fair when kids transfer from easier schools and have higher GPAs at all. I would deny him, too.

My school was hard and a bunch of kids transferred there for the senior year from much easier schools where they had 3.5s and up for doing nothing so they only qualified to take classes meant for sophomores and juniors at my school. If my school hadn't knocked them down, a bunch of them would have graduated above people who went to a harder school AND took much higher-level classes

My high school had a similar policy and for good reason. People actively transferred schools to take advantage of differing curriculum difficulty and academic competition and to claim higher rankings.

It's especially widespread in my home state because public universities are required by law to admit students that graduated in the top x% of their class, regardless of institution.

and the policy isn't stupid. it's to prevent kids who switch school from getting the valedictorian at the last minute.

The policy is fair, but they need to corroborate the policy before they actually say that he can't be valedictorian

This policy isn't uncommon. People jumping to the conclusion of racism are doing a bit too much.

The only fact you have is this student is black. We don't know the race of anyone else involved.

That's probably why he was denied.
