Both the video and the song had impact.

Bigger viral hit - Wrecking Ball but that's not enough. Bad Romance won 2 grammys (one for video and one for best pop vocal performance) and 7VMAs ... It's way ahead of WB (I am sure Wrecking Ball will win VMA this year but it won't come close to Gaga's 7 VMAs + Grammys + It's 12M Sales WW )

Wrecking Ball had more impact but Bad Romance has a better video and is a much better song. Wrecking Ball broke records though, it was parody-able, people were imitating it, it came out after that controversial performance and featured a child star "gone wrong" so it was everywhere in the media and EVERY ONE was aware of it and had an opinion of it.

If you include the meat dress as part of Bad Romance's impact though (because she wore it to accept her VMA for video of the year) then Bad Romance definitely wins. I just feel Gaga's massive/rapid decline has caused the GP to forget about the height of ha fame/power, that was Bad Romance. Wrecking Ball is fresh in everyone's minds. This is the sort of comparison that might need 4-5 years time to let them both be dated and in the past before you can actually call it.

Obviously "Bad Romance". That song/video was a game changer. "Wrecking Ball" was just controversial.

Bad Romance as a Song and a Video is a lot bigger than WB. WB had impact just as a viral hit, whereas Bad Romance apart from being a viral hit it was a SMASH hit all over the world and it sold 9.7M copies in 2010 alone even tho it was released October 2009. It won Grammys, VMAs etc.

And you are right if that comparison is made in 2-3 years then it will fair a lot better.

I didn't know impact = the amount of awards? Anyway, the way I see it WB's cultural impact in american society was pretty clear. i.e. Halloween and Xmas people dressed up as her in the video AND did this. among other things

Wrecking Ball is one of the most controversial videos recently.Most people remember Miley's video not Gaga's because its simple.

They both had impact in two very different forms. Bad Romance elevated Gaga from the best of the new breed of pop girls to and icon and potential future legend. WB severed all ties with the Miley's Disney girl past. etc

Incomparable but Bad Romance was better in every respect.

Bad Romance was released 5 years ago, not 8 months ago. The fact that it is still being used as a means of comparison for quality, impact and controversy is testament to its impact.

that's not really impact. Lady Gaga's Bad Romance broke streaming, sales and award records at the time. Wrecking Ball only broke streaming records.

Obviously a lot of people will say wrecking ball because it's newer and fresher in their memories but how would u explain VMAs opening with Bad Romance as a soundtrack (when they have never ever done that before because it's not fair to other nominated songs) if that's not impact then what it is ? If Breaking records for the most VMAs in one night is not impact then what it is ? Being the most watched video on Youtube at the time (while Wrecking Ball is not even second right now) ? Selling nearly 10M WW in 2010 even tho it was released in 2009 ? If that's not impact then what it is ?

Edit: And let me add Bad Romance recently became the first song to receive a digital DIAMOND certification by RIA. If that's not impact then what is ?
