Nicki receives critical acclaim for "Pills N Potions"
Quote:
Nicki Minaj released the first official single off her new album, "The Pink Print," and it's totally different than what you'd expect from the rapper. "Pills N Potions," produced by Dr. Luke, is a powerful ballad of heartbreak punctuated by slow rap verses. "Pills n potions, we're overdosing. I'm angry but I still love you. Pills n potions, we're overdosing. Can't stand it but I still love you," she sings.

We wanted “Monster”-level bars, an incredible cameo and a hook that would haunt us in our sleep. Well, the Dr. Luke-produced song co-written by Ester Dean kind of gives us all those things, yet not in the way you’d expect.
After opening with a spare, haunting drum beat, Minaj comes in singing in a feathery, near-whisper about “Pills and potions/We’re overdosin’/I’m angry but I still love you.” The vocals are among the prettiest (and poppiest) we’ve heard from Nicki to date, especially when they get blown up with an echo effect in the second pass, where Nicki adds, “I still love, I still love, I still lu-uh-uhhhv.”

he doesn't disappoint on the Dr. Luke-produced monster of a song, and after a few months of steadly dropping her more street singles, Nicki shows—once again—how she can delicately balance pop and hip-hop, while spitting true to her "real rap" promise to fans. This is also one of Nicki's more personal tracks, which she has told fans on Twitter is the general approach to the new album. With the first single now out, stay tuned for much more from Nicki, including details about the album. Expect this one to be heard all over the radio for the duration of the summer.

As promised, Nicki Minaj comes through with the first official single from her third studio album The Pinkprint, "Pills N Potions." On Monday we received the cover art and a few words about the record from Nicki, she called it "uplifting" and "soulful." Indeed, it's a very different direction than "ChiRaq", more pop-driven and definitely radio friendly, with Nicki singing about bad habits (pills and potions) as she reflects on love lost.

Nicki Minaj has gone back to widescreen down-the-middle pop music on her new single “Pills N Potions.” But if she has to make pop music, best that she make pop music like this. Top 40 overlord Dr. Luke produced “Pills N Potions,” the first single on Nicki’s forthcoming album The Pink Print, and it’s a graceful and personal piece of work.

“Pills N Potions” finds Ms. Minaj singing for majority of the track, with familiar chords and harmonies running throughout. It is straight pop, with some sprinklings of rap here or there. However, that doesn’t take away from it’s composition and it actual ends up being quite enjoyable.

Nicki Minaj has caused quite the stir with fans today after finally premiering her new single 'Pills N Potions' and it seems her new stripped back direction has gone down a storm with Twitter flooded with praise for the reflective ballad.
The former American Idol judge has ditched the insane rap flow, bizarre alter-egos and brash attitude for more of a laid-back sound on 'Pills N Potions' which features Nicki sweetly singing and calmly delivering her lyrics.

the piano rap ballad "Pills N Potion" finds her sublimely (and maturely) rising above her detractors, even singing that she still loves them. More surprising: "[People] swearin' on the Bible that they love you but they're no different from all your rivals/ but I don't wish death on 'em, I just reflect on 'em."

After a 2014 spent releasing beastmode tracks that show off just how monstrously outsized a presence she is, it’s nice to hear her introspective. She sings the chorus as sweetly as any pop singer on the planet, the lyrics are slow and deep, and the sum of those parts is actually fairly reminiscent of one that glorious middle ground she found on one of the best Nicki songs ever, “Right Through Me.”

"Pills N Potions," the long-promised first single, is not a perfect song. It will probably be the song on the album that, by the time you actually get the album, you skip because it's been over-exposed. But it is going to be really, really over-exposed because it hits that almost impossibly alchemical balance of pop and rap that Nicki Minaj has promised and that everyone wants from her. And it's a breakup song that's also about drugs, which are the two most reliable topics to make everyone on the planet—especially teenagers, who make up 90 percent of the music-consuming planet—identify with it. You can wave your lighters to this. You can shut down arenas with this.

The Dr. Luke-produced song opens with a simple drum beat over which Minaj sings, “Pills and potions, we’re overdosing” in an echoed, cooing tone. But as it moves towards its infectious hook, adding a sweeping piano and violin arrangement, “Pills N Potions” becomes an emotional, introspective pop ballad with instant hit potential. And Minaj does rap on the track—“Even though you out here lookin’ so ungrateful/ I’ma keep it movin’, be classy and graceful”—but in a far more tame manner than she’s deployed on other tracks this year. Sonically, the song recalls the more subdued singles from her first album—“Moment 4 Life” and “Your Love”—which could mean she’ll be going back to basics on The Pink Print. And that would be a good thing.

“Potions” is a heartfelt ballad that positions Nicki’s vocals in a new light. Rather than rely on an supersized amount of auto-tune, Nicki’s voice sounds both pure and vulnerable as she makes her way through her conflicted feelings. In effort to cater to both of her fan bases, the song marries Nicki’s singing with her confident rapping, delivering a fiery message to the one she can’t shake (“Ayo, they could never make me hate you/Even though what you was doing wasn’t tasteful/Even though you out here lookin’ so ungrateful/I’mma keep it movin’ be classy and graceful”).

What do you think of it? It was produced by Dr. Luke and co-written by Ester Dean.
The Pinkprint is scheduled to drop later this year.

Over the past few weeks, Nicki Minaj has promised that she would return to her hip hop roots and strip away some of the pop exterior that helped her crossover, on her new album The Pinkprint. With her recent singles “Yass B*tch Yass” and “Chiraq”, it definitely seemed that she was on that path, trading in her pink wig for darker street anthems. However, her latest song is a complete one hundred and eighty degree turn back to what made her famous. “Pills N Potions” finds Ms. Minaj singing for majority of the track, with familiar chords and harmonies running throughout. It is straight pop, with some sprinklings of rap here or there. However, that doesn’t take away from it’s composition and it actual ends up being quite enjoyable. Get ready to hear this song everywhere, and make room for its infectious hook in your head right away.

The lines reflect Nicki's recent explanation of the track, which has been produced by Dr. Luke and written by Ester Dean, revealing it's a story of “love,” “urgency” and “betrayal.”
Fans couldn't be happier with the new, chilled out Nicki, with @flossynigga commenting: “You really outdid yourself @NICKIMINAJ this one is for the books,” and @SHENEL_MINAJ dramatically revealing: “Im just naturally rolling around on the floor crying. #PillsNPotions.”
'Pills N Potions' will feature on Nicki's third album 'The Pink Print' which is expected for release before the end of the year.

I have a terrible track record picking this sort of thing, but it sounds like a hit. Listen below.

Where the latter was an invective directed at gawkers checking her out and the video found her literally gunning down one offender, the piano rap ballad "Pills N Potion" finds her sublimely (and maturely) rising above her detractors, even singing that she still loves them.
