The only way it really could have been Michael is if someone magically had full body footage of Michael singing and dancing and tediously edited out the background to include the golden throne set and then the other effects. But MJ's moves were always so razor sharp and pristine, a quality missing from that performance.

I think you're entirely forgetting what they can do with technology these days..
Isn't a hologram like an animation? You can create/make it do whatever you want?
The hologram is actually just a 2D projection against a piece of glass. (Look it up on google, it's called "Pepper's ghost"). The source can be anything.
Tupac's was an animation. He was rendered in CGI (computer generated imagery), hence why he had this "ghostly," non-human look to him - especially when you pay close attention to some of his more subtle movements like the way he sways his body.
