I think Americans (and everyone really) should always check their privilege.
Although, checking privilege does not equate to being "thankful". Who exactly do gay people have to be thankful to, straight people? No. Past gay activists? Yes.
Also, there is little to nothing we can do to change other countries' culture/laws. It can actually be a bit racist.
Well, since you speak about USA overall, then no, cause it's so backward compared to developed European countries on gay issues and then some. It also still lives in 18th century in terms of religion, so it has a long long way to go. Western Europe is just so far ahead socially that's it's not even funny anymore.

Not really, think about southern gays. They are completely exiled from the entire community if they're gay. Even principals and teachers don't agree with gay marriage.
Every country has their issues. I can point out a list of issues facing Western Europeans especially their whole schtick on the immigrant issue. Really the two areas are about equal.
Exactly. I don't know why ATRL is always so perched on the USA
I bet most of them haven't even been here to experience it
Y'all got independence from us, but the UK remains superior in its treatment and acceptance of all people.
I do think that it's better than countries where you can be jailed/killed for being gay. Having said that in 13 states it was illegal to be gay until 2003, just over a decade ago.
I'm not fully satisfied, but honestly I am thankful that I have people around me that support me no matter what and that I'm still healthy and living. Marriage and being able to adopting kids needs to be a right in my state soon tho
"Thankful" is obviously the wrong word. Gay people could be eased not to live in a country where they are put in jail/get murdered because of their sexuality, but "thankful"? Yes, I am thankful for living in Germany where people fought and still fight for my rights; I might call myself being lucky.
However, why should I be thankful for others not beating me up on streets? If you believe in a higher power, thank this higher power for making your life easier, but don't thank politics or other people who refrain from doing you harm. This is ridiculous. There's no "but I suffer more than you". Every single suffering because of any kind of discrimination is too much.
We deserve every right on this planet to exist, we (and every other group who's discriminated against) deserve the same priviliges as any other white, heterosexual, sane, rich, good-looking (by society standards) man out there. There's nothing to be thankful for. I'd rather die than thanking anyone for considering me an equal human being.
