Should American gays be more thankful?
im so glad to be an american gay man where legally i will not be taken to jail or even be killed for doing any homosexual activity.
of course LGBT rights has a long way to go in america but do you think that american gays should check their privilege compared to other LGBT people across the world, specifically those in the middle east, africa, asia and eastern europe?

Yes. I'd probably be even happier in like Canada or the UK but I am happy that I won't be denied hospital services, can live my life without legal persecution, and can feel safe (unless I lived in Kansas ).

If they're not southern gays, sure. Gays in the south still can't get married or even adopt kids in some states and there is much homophobia still present because of the heavy presence of religion

Well, since you speak about USA overall, then no, cause it's so backward compared to developed European countries on gay issues and then some. It also still lives in 18th century in terms of religion, so it has a long long way to go. Western Europe is just so far ahead socially that's it's not even funny anymore.

Imo USA is still pretty backward when it comes to gay rights because of religious influences. Here in the Uk it's a lot better for gays

We are at very slow paced but still its better than nothing. I remember when Massachusetts is the only state that accepts gay marriage... our freedom of speech make it all possible so I am more thankful for that. Also, our generation is more acceptable but yea it is very slow paced because America is also filled with so much ignorant and bigoted people and don't even get me started with a bunch of people who will follow what their religion preaches!

Yes, especially when they are just as prejudice as other people around the world.

Reminds me of Lily Allen's hard out here lyric, "We're out of the woods, we've never had it so good, and if you can't detect the sarcasm you've misunderstood."
Yes any move towards equality is a good thing but having basic human right barely feels like something you should be "grateful" for so much as respectful of. Basically if you have any rights that someone else doesn't, it's your responsibility to ensure they do. The world is too country focused, it's humans that matter.

of course in some places it's easier, but in no place is it perfect. no matter what country, people there will still face some discrimination. it may not be as harsh, but it's still discrimination in some way. you can't legitimise one person's discrimination by saying "it's worse in other places".
i also find it ignorant to say people in more typically liberal countries should we thankful .. uh, why don't you tell that to all the gays who commit suicide annually.

These two posts sum up my opinion perfectly.
Just because some gays have it worse shouldn't automatically diminish the suffering that gays go through every day in any country. Comparing gay suffering in a liberal country like America to that of the middle east helps absolutely no one. The closer America comes to equality, the more we can try to influence other countries to do the same. Its a process.

Every country has their issues. I can point out a list of issues facing Western Europeans especially their whole schtick on the immigrant issue. Really the two areas are about equal.
