My first topic but here it goes...


I was reading the replies on the RS review about ARTPOP and scrolled down to read peoples reactions and some of them are really really vile.

My point of view is: if you don't dare to say it to someone in real life, don't post it.

Am I too oldfashioned in that sense? I might be slightly older then some of you on ATRL so maybe this is something that is the standard and I'm outgrowing it.

"Back in the day" you just read your news paper and the articles that you didn't like you just skipped. Only the sad people would take an effort and write in a letter. That's how I still view it because simply put I do not have any illusion that my comment on anything is gonna matter to anything or anyone and it baffles me that everyone seems to think these days you NEED to have an opinion on anything and everything.
Worse yet, that it matters to the world, like being the centre of the universe and without your comment the world will end.


So please fellow ATRL people am I getting old?

I wholeheartedly agree. It's immature to spread hate. If you don't like something, just move along because bitching doesn't achieve anything but spread negativity.

No. You are not getting old. Most of the people making those comments are twelve year olds (though some of them do happen to frequent here as well, unfortunately).

Hmm well I had a discussion about it with my boyfriend about it who's 9 years younger then me and he shrugged and said "it's the internet".

I find that a lame excuse to be honest, isn't it real people on the internet?

I think websites like 4chan and anon in general promote, well, anonymity and hatred. They are generally hostile and vile simply because they have no reason to be nice or courteous.

Go to a YouTube page and look at any of the comments there. It's literally some of the worst opinions you could ever hear; pretty unbelievable in general.

It seems so strange to me tbh it feels sometimes like people rather keep pushing the hate then support the artist they stan for.
Makes me really wonder how some of those people are in real life

a 10 years old Katy Perry stan(most likely) wrote that comment. I don't expect them to act more mature, but I do expect such publications such as RS to have an age limit or a moderated comment section that would weed out all the bs.

What kind of stan it is should not matter, I'm speaking on a personal level not who he/she supports, that should not be the point imo.

You'd be surprised by how many of them are actually grown men. People like Perez Hilton, Jemeul Da'Silva, Angela Cheng, and even a few people on here are all Madonna fans in their thirties who spend a very large portion of their lives hating on someone younger than them.

The usage of "reductive" gives this Madonna fan away, and to be honest they're probably an adult. I know a lot of people say these kinds of comments come from children, but the majority don't. From what I've seen, actual children don't care about stan wars, they care about having fun and enjoying their music. It's the adults who are so actively obsessed and involved.

I think criticism is healthy and I believe even negativity is okay as long as it's being presented in a mature way, but comments like in the OP come from people who are missing something in their lives. Fact is, it's not human nature to be hateful. It's not normal to be so angry at the world that you post such hateful and nasty things. Some of the things I've seen from stans go so above what I feel is ever necessary that I forget they're talking about pop stars as opposed murderous dictators like Adolph Hitler.

The Internet is a playground for people who have nowhere else to vent. These people are angry at something in their lives and they live vicariously through popstars, so these kinds of comments are thrown around because they can hide behind anonymity. Young kids and teenagers can sometimes get a pass from me because I remember how immature I was at a young age, but when it comes to grown adults, it baffles me. What happened in your life that has caused you to be so negative? What happened in your life that has caused you to focus on people you don't like as opposed to things that could possibly make you happy? I get paying attention to popstars in general, and I even pay attention to some of the popstars I don't like, but going above and beyond paying attention and actively seeking out these people so you can hate on them, is sad, and only shows how sad of a person you truly are.

That's true, I have an 11 year old daughter and she has no clue about stan wars. She likes songs from Kesha, she likes songs from Gaga, and it all co-exists with eachother. She absolutely has no idea there are forums like these or Rolling Stones where it's funny to be shady or worse, you become "famous" and boast your ego by the amount of upvotes on your comments.
