The producers were pointing out the hypocrisy of James' statement. There was a lot more in both James and the producer's statements than just what they consider a sequel.
Imo, James needed to be taken down a few notches. He was extremely unprofessional, especially by posting it on instagram. He had the nerve to imply that they needed his consent to do the movie. They should've gotten Harmony's consent, yes, but James is irrelevant in this case.
Edit: The producer's last statement pissed me off as well. It was a dig at Selena, Vanessa, and Ashley more than anything. It shouldn't matter that they started out from Disney if the movie and the acting were good. Was a bit of a pretentious stateent tbh (I did chuckle tho )

I don't disagree there. He has made a bit of a mockery of himself and needs to have his Instagram taken away from him.

Anyway, I understand the idea behind the producer's statement, but the way he delivered it just made him the worse of 2 evils for me in this situation. However, I feel like a re-boot, which is usually released some time after the original series (at least in theory -- franchises like
The Amazing Spiderman are recent exceptions), is meant to be geared towards newer fans, whereas a lot of sequels are usually released pretty quickly after the first in an effort to keep cashing in on the success from the same audience. I do stand behind my comment that the first movie wasn't high art by any means, but seems like it came from a more genuine place than this.
In any case, glad our responses did not devolve into some catty, ATRL throwdown.
