Catholics are not strict creationists like most Protestants. A common misconception, especially if you're used to associating Christianity with American Bible Belt Protestants. A catholic priest was actually amongst the first to theorize the Big Bang. The Church is actually not that anti-science, at least in these later years. They've moved more towards a co-existence between science and religion. The two aren't mutually exclusive after all.
Let's clear up another misconception: gays can be baptized. Pope Francis is actually quite tolerant, I don't know why everyone's up in arms.
