Discussion: Is print news dead?

Many experts in journalism as well as social media believe that print news (newspapers, magazines, etc.) are going out of style. With the rise of social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram, news travels faster and is delivered more personally in ways people deman nowadays. The Internet has all but taken over how the media operates, most newspaper outlets have even converged and transferred over to websites, blogs and other digital outlets to represent their news formats.

So? Is the empire of print media dead? Or is there still hope?

I don't think so, at least not for the newspaper. I guess it would be good for the environment if it actually did die out though.

newspaper circulation has been decreasing for years now, newspaper outlets make less and less money every year.

No. I much prefer reading a physical newspaper/ magazine as apposed to the online version and I know many people who are the same.

90% of young people get news from the internet, so I don't see how -unless something radical happens- newspaper groups will stay in business for a huge amount longer. Of course most newspapers have apps and websites, so it may merely be a case of newspapers just becoming online entities.

It's like books I guess. Now the kindle has come along physical books seem obsolete unless they are visual/photo books or sth. The average blockbuster novel doesn't need to be psychical. Same with albums, etc.

In not surprised that they're decreasing in sales but they will always have their place.

I always read one on the train/underground and I pick them up whenever I go to the shops.

I agree with this. Very informed opinion.

I just did an exam today with this very question. It showed how newspaper sales in the UK had declined in the last 30 years. I don't think they'll stop being printed for a while but I could see some newspapers becoming exclusively online.

Ask anyone in the communications industry and they will say yes. Newspaper and magazine revenue falls every year. It's gotten so bad for newspapers that they can no longer be strict with selling ad space and have to negotiate with lower prices for advertisers to get more money.

Our society is entering a digital age. Magazines will last longer, though, because they are a special interest media and draw more attention than newspapers.

Haha funny, I just did my economics exam on this question yesterday.

The way I see it, as long as the older generation still exists, there will be some demand for print news, but once they're gone I really do see it going for good. It's just a burden and they're constantly making losses.

It's declining. Print media has its pros and cons, but the fact that it can't be updated immediately when breaking news happen will be its demise. No one here for that at this age.

However, I dislike how unprofessional media online has been where there aren't any checks to ensure that everything that is put out is 100% factual. Plus, tired of the messTiness that the comment sections of the news article always are and how many ads are on the page. Also, tired of grammatical errors and false rumors.

I wish the legitimacy of print media can be imposed on online sources.
