I use wikipedia's citation to find sources for my essays
!
I use Wiki to get a broad understanding of whatever topic, and then refer to the cited pages for more info (or just to cite stuff in papers), so useful
I hate when teachers say "Do not go on Wikipedia!" I literally have been using it since middle school and I've had zero problems
I understand not sourcing it obviously, but it's still an amazing website to use. Every statement on a page has a citation that links you to even more info. And if you're scared that someone edited in wrong information then just check them
I don't understand when people say 'anybody can edit it!' Have you ever tried to edit something on wikipedia? I tried to one time and I had a source and within 10 minutes it was changed back and I got a warning that if I tried to edit it again they'd ban me.
It's great to get started on a topic and find sources linked through them.
I think the worry is that despite their efforts to keep lies of their pages, it is still possible for error to get past them. I had an asshole friend who would go onto random pages and change dates only slightly and they would get past their filters occasionally. Shameful
Dunno about most schools, but mine pays a fortune for our school library and academic journals that we have on reserve. Most of the requirements for our papers at college is that we cite from our library - since our school pays for it.
Otherwise if everyone just used Wiki for free, they'd be wasting their money on our archives and journals they own.
It probably depends on the teacher too, I'm sure some don't care as long as the paper is good (idk where but there has to be a idgaf teacher out there).
The fact that it can be edited by anyone is actually an assurance that you are getting the best information in the world. There is no reason for professors or teachers not to allow it as a citation when it is the most accurate site on the internet.
