That is a tragic opening week projection for a film like Maleficent.
It actually isn't. If the movie shows legs, it has kids appeal that will keep going, could go as high as 200 mil in the US with ease. International numbers will be even stronger. I'm predicting between 500-600mil WW which is a big hit.
Hihihi seems like those fake articles created by the Anidroids about "investors fleeing" is going to make them even look more stupid now. Though I'm not getting ahead of myself and am still expecting the worst.
Based on matinees, Neighbors looks like it’s gonna whoop The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — with estimates right now $40M+ range for Universal’s frat comedy … it’s playing incredibly strong and it could even get up to $42M+ to $43M+, according to some distribs
Gaga is nowhere near as relevant in Canada as she used to be. "Applause" was a moderate hit at best and she's no longer a water cooler conversation topic, Miley has replaced her in that regard.
Just as investors were starting to forget what better-than-expected earnings and a stronger outlook looked like in the media sector, The Walt Disney Co. came along with an impressive second-quarter report.
Much of the strength came from its movie business, as both Frozen and Captain America: The Winter Soldier demonstrated how much successful titles can contribute.
“The studio outperformance is even more of a driver of outperformance that we previously expected,” said David Bank, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.
The sequel to Captain America generated about US$700-billion at global box offices.
As a result, Mr. Bank suggested the third installment of the franchise in 2016 may serve as a major driver for the company much like Iron Man and Pixar’s perennial hits have.
The analyst also highlighted the promising outlook for Avengers: Age Of Ultron, which opens about a year from now, and Star Wars: Episode VII set to debut in December 2015.
He believes the studio division can exceed its previous peak EBIT of approximately US$1.2-billion on a sustained basis.
However, Mr. Bank cautioned that the upcoming release of Maleficent on May 28 may disappoint and potentially weigh on Disney’s third-quarter results.

Avril could probably outgross Vegasney by just touring some Asian countries. The Asian leg of the BTW was super successful (the benefits of being truly global and not only being an European act) and since Avril is like kinda bigger than Gaga in some Asian countries, she should give it a go.
