I would only get married for the legal benefits. I don't see the point of getting married for love. What does a piece of paper from the government have to do with my love for another person.
No it seems unnecessary, except for the legal benefits and stuff but I think there should be a happy medium where getting married and getting divorced is a lot easier and not as big of a deal. Like... the amount of time put into one day is ridiculous and weddings generally end up so cheesy. You should be able to go to a courthouse, submit a signed paper and leave married and/or partnered with all the benefits etc. That way, divorces wouldn't be such a big issue. If you want to split you just submit another form.
My ideal marriage would be a dinner at a nice restaurant wherw I invite my closest friends and family under the pretense of a get together. And then some simple vows, a shared meal, and done. None of the pomp and pageantry
