Worst Gay Community Issue?
There are other issues that affect our community , and i get that you cant really place a status on a problem (that one is bigger then the other) - since at the end of the day they all have negative effects on us.
BUT what do you think our community should address first?
(gay marriage aside)
Quote:
Queer and Trans* Youth Homelessness
40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT.
Violence Against Queer and Trans* People
In May, there were at least 7 anti-LGBT attacks in New York City alone.
Racial Justice
Many of the issues facing the general LGBT population are even worse for people of color
Immigrant Justice
An estimated 2.7% of our nation’s undocumented immigrants identify as LGBT
Health
There exist significant disparities in health between heterosexual and LGBT people
Economic Justice
Employment discrimination, lack of health insurance, homelessness, and other factors make LGBT people particularly vulnerable to the impact of economic inequality
Trans* Justice
Trans* people are consistently abused, discriminated against, harassed, and assaulted. Too often, the “T” gets excluded from LGBT initiatives and campaigns

Trans and more minority representation. Kinda sick of seeing a cis white gay in every gay role. And glaad should have went after time for laverne cox.

For me its Economic Justice, since that seems to have an on-flow effect on the other problems

The internal hatred within the community towards gays that other gays don't deem worthy whether it be toward races, trans people, bisexuals, effeminate/butch gays, drag shaming, aids phobia, etc.....it needs to be dealt with

I think gay rights, or civil rights in general are really top down issues, the big moves have to come from government, changes in law facilitate change in society
liberal laws breed liberal people, like kids today in the UK will grow up always knowing that gay marriage is okay, which in turn tells them that being gay is okay
so if equal rights were granted to all, a lot of the issues would begin to sort themselves out, or become easier to tackle anyway

THIS! ****, I hate how there is some sort of hierarchy, with masc guys at the top. I think a lot of it comes from western values of masuclinity and heretronomisliation though, which are just wider society problems

I know there are probably more serious issues but for me it's that no successful academic person, like scientists and stuff, is gay

No i see that being an issue as well. gay youth grow up with so little to look up towards as a role model - we have mostly just pop gurls - but even then they are not gay themselves (seems bi at most) > so i dont know what message that gives to us gays since there are obviously successful gay people

Sally Ride was. She was a physicist and the first American woman in space.

i think economic issues are most damaging and more overlooked
homelessness and job discrimination means its harder to build an independent life

health. besides that the internal homophobia within the community. If the entire community stopped bringing itself down to try and conform to what the norm wants us to be, we'd be much closer to solving the other issues on the list
