I think this holds true. I think that people are more inclined to listen to music by people who look like them. Because whites are the overwhelming majority, and those that heavily purchase music, they determine who is successful. That is why you have artists like Nicki Minaj, Ne-yo, Usher, Chris Brown and several others who are experimenting with POP sounds.
The biggest example of this is the rise of Adele. There are many black women that can sing circles around Adele, but because we are more inclined to listen to music by people who look like us, many white people are unfamiliar with Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Jazmine Sullivan, and Keyshia Cole (all who can blow)....Similar to Justin Timberlake vs. Miguel
