Hayden Panettiere and costar Zachary Quinto shoot new scenes for the upcoming season of their hit NBC drama, Heroes, at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park, Los Angeles on Friday.
Also spotted on set: Jack Coleman! It seems like Sylar (Quinto) and HRG (Coleman) are going to be working together in season 3 after all!

Tim Kring showed off the first episode of the next season of NBC's Heroes at Comic-Con, and TV.com has the details.

]Of all the breakout hits of the last several years, none climbed as high as NBC's Heroes, a drama about "ordinary people with extraordinary abilities." The show has made household names out of Hayden Panettiere, Milo Ventimiglia, Masi Oka, and several others, and has carved out its place as one of the top--if not the top--science-fiction programs on television today.

At this year's Comic-Con, the Heroes panel included a special surprise. Taking the stage with a briefcase chained to his wrist, series creator Tim Kring teased the audience with a present. Kring opened the briefcase and held aloft a DVD fresh off the burner with handwriting on it indicating it was the season three premiere of the show, which isn't due to air until September.

Kring asked the audience not to say a word about the premiere to anyone else...unless they liked it. In that case, he wanted everyone to talk about the premiere and let the world know that Heroes is back "in a big way."

So, Mr. Kring, you will get your wish. On the following page (click the Recap tab above) there is a play-by-play recount of the entire first episode, with major spoilers (read at your own risk!). For those who don't want to hear every little detail that happened, some nonspoiler bullet points are below.

--The opening scene begins with Peter encountering a fellow Hero who pulls a gun on him--and it isn't who you would think it is.

--The mystery gunman who shot Nathan is revealed--and it isn't who you would think it is.

--There is a healthy dose of humor in this episode, and some the best effects ever in the series...lots of 'em. The premiere was shown in HD, and it pops off the screen. Productionwise, the premiere is just about as impressive as anything seen on television in recent memory.

--We're only introduced to one new Hero in the premiere, and he/she was previously announced.

--The show features a lot of Heroes coming together and drifting apart, and not only geographically.

--Sylar (of course) delivers the best line of the show--actually, of the series.

--A familiar face returns--and it isn't who you think it is.

--There's a big game-changer revealed in the premiere, and it should alter the series like nothing before. Comic-book purists will probably scoff, but fans of the show will enjoy it.

All in all, the premiere was...amazing. Heroes fans will be elated, and those who jumped ship after the second season may find themselves scrambling back on board. Many Kudos to Kring and company for a healthy return...the question is: Can they keep it up?

The third chapter of Heroes has yet to begin, but anticipation is already palpable for it (TV.com previewed the excellent first half of the debut), largely in part to its mouthwatering title, "Villains."

The straightforward names of the volumes have always been a good indicator of what's in store for that chapter. Season one gave us "Genesis," which appropriately detailed the beginnings of these "ordinary people with extraordinary abilities." Season two was named "Generations," and focused on the family trees of the superpowered characters.

Everyone loves to hate a good baddie, and "Villains" will go with the flow and examine how people use their newfound powers for evil. But the third season will be more than just one chapter and is going to be split up into separate volumes (just as season two was supposed to before the writers' strike cut things short).

So what's it called? Tighten up your spandex costumes, because it sounds like things may not be looking too good for Claire, Peter, Hiro, and the other freaks of nature. Speaking with UK site Digital Spy (video courtesy of ODI and contains slight spoilers as well as funny accents) at the Edinburgh Television Festival, series creator Tim Kring revealed that "Villains" will run 13 episodes and that the second half of the season will run 12 episodes and be dubbed... "Fugitives." Don't bother pulling out your calculators--that's a 25-episode season three.

Kring shied away from detailing what volume four would be about, saying that even if he explained it, it wouldn't make any sense without having seen season three and would contain major spoilers for what is coming up in the series.

Kring also said that episode 10 is currently being filmed, and the final episode of "Villains" is now in the writers' hands. Season two was supposed to be three volumes, with "Villains" being the last and the second volume--which was axed because of the strike--titled "Exodus."

Among the other tidbits Kring divulged: Echo the mailman from the "Going Postal" webisodes will appear in "Villains," Heroes: Origins isn't completely dead and Kring wants to give it another shot, and Christopher Eccleston--who played the invisible man--may be returning if his schedule allows it.

So let's hear some theories on "Fugitives" in the comments below. Are we looking at an X-Men scenario in which our Heroes are viewed as mutants and threats to society? Is the government going to try to squash them a la Watchmen? Or maybe they're on the wrong side of the law because they're passing bad checks! Theorize!
