I work in the environment and I know for a fact that the way food is produced is not sustainable in the long term, so it's either adapt now or come to a halt in a shock later

No it is. In Europe and many Western countries like Japan, the population is stagnating and when the older population dies it will drop
Also as more women become educated and hold better jobs they'll hold off children until later or have none at all. Which means second and third world countries will experience this in the future too. The UN has actually lowered its estimates, and many countries are urging its citizens to have more children. It other words when the old die the world will have a major issue on its hands. Not enough people.
So really what will happen is the current situation will cause an over abundance of food in the future. Good for the poor but knowing the world it will go to waste. Or we cut back on our food and return to the more organic days of the past. Really in 50 or even 100 years this whole food thing we speak of won't be a issue. But more of a we have too much good issue.
