I think the reason a lot of people are dragging him though is because he doesnt act like this at all anymore, and is seen to be 'selling out' or whatever.

The problem is major labels and/or corporate radio won't support, or give little support to songs with those open lyrics. If they do, they're boxed in by the press as that "gay" artist, instead of just…an artist, and they're likely independent as a result.
It's a lose-lose situation until the culture changes and the grey hairs decide to change things 20 years behind the culture. Mika, Patrick Wolf, Adam Lambert, Mykki Blanco, Le1f, and countless others have said as much in interviews.
Sam uses lyrics that may be relevant to his life, but modified with vague identifiers to please his label...I can't blame him. Look - its sad, but it's the way society is right now.
His insane talent deserves to be shared with the world, and if this is how he has to do it, so be it.
Let him be.
