the hyperbole is real! We don't have the "scourge of knife crime" here either, even though it's legal to carry them.

It's obviously something related to UK culture. Someone said they have a hooligan pub culture there where people go and get smashed and vandalize things...

I doubt they'd have time to go to their desk & grab a gun. However, it would be more likely that a student went through the teachers desk, took the gun and then killed 20 people. Instead of putting weapons (guns) in schools to protect people from other weapons, it would be much more logical to ban ALL weapons from the school premises & to have metal detectors installed.
