The racism controversy embroiling Don Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has reached half way around the world to Malaysia, where President Obama is on a diplomatic mission to Asia Pacific nations.
"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That's what happened here," the President said.
Obama also said Sterling's alleged comments are an example of how "the United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation."
"That's still there, the vestiges of discrimination. We've made enormous strides, but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," Obama said in Malaysia.
Sterling, who has owned the basketball franchise for nearly three decades, is now under investigation by the NBA over the alleged comments.
I hate how he is framing this guy as the exception to the rule. Truth is majority of the financial elite still hold these attitudes towards minorities. They insist they aren't racist, but they foster a culture in which it is not acceptable to associate with minorities in public.

If the Clippers owner knew what was best for him, he would've kept his mouth shut and continued making money off Black basketball players like the rest of them.

Agree with keeping his mouth shut, but most seem pretty fair. They are still paying these guys millions of dollars to dribble balls...not exactly slave labor
I am no advocate for racist people, but I am for free speech. Language influences policy, but if Language remains at the dinner table, why doesn't it matter to the GP?
He is racist, its obvious, but are the players getting paid? Yes. So what is the problem. I am sure these players don't give a flying *** what this man feels about them. They are too focus during the play offs. Our world is getting too sensitive.
I am black, I know a good number of racist black people who says the most derogatory things against white people. I confront them about it, but ultimately they have to change their hearts. I feel the same way towards this owner guy. As long as his thinking do not affect the players pay check, it shouldn't matter how he secretly feels about them.
Lastly, some black people get on my nerves trying to demonize rich white people. Instead of putting all that energy into trying to find their faults, why wont they work on themselves. Black communities are plagued with violence, sexism, and lack of education. These are the things we should be fighting against, not a person who doesn't like you. Gang violence is killing blacks, not white people. If you dig deeper, poverty has strong ties with the history of slavery and the lack of civil rights. Black people where used and abused and left to fend for themselves. This is the reason why some black communities are in a failed state. Learning the difference between systematic racism (which involves privileges for certain people) vs personal racism is key.
