I don't think Lauryn ever really had much of a problem of being pigeon-holed because her gender because she never really had an outsized cartoonish, branding gimmick. Lauryn's material spoke for itself. With Nicki . . . it's a little different (LOL). But I guess in L-Boogie's day, you didn't have to be so "extra" to get noticed if you were a woman. Back then, there were quite a few chicks in the limelight (Kim, Missy, Foxy, Left-Eye, EVE, etc.). But I get what Nicki's trying to say, even if it is ironic, coming from her, of all people.

She actually always manages to spit out some really intelligent things when it comes to feminism. Good on her, the "female rap" title always sounds like they're acknowledging she raps, but that it's just female rap and therefore not in the same league as male rappers. Good on her for scalping the patriarchy and it's hideous terminology.

Or maybe, just maybe she's an actual feminist. You know, somebody that believes in the equality of woman. She's not saying that she's "above" female rap, she's saying that she just doesn't wanna be seen as a great female rapper, but a great rapper period. It really isn't a hard concept to grasp.

Stop taking it so literally. People use the term "female rapper" to discredit female MCs all the god damn time. They will be like "Oh, yeah!! She is a great female rapper. One of the best female rappers of all time." and so on. Why not a great RAPPER? One of the greatest rappers of all time? Come on now lol.

And we all know gender does play a role in determining who most people consider a great rapper whether people acknowledge it or not. Hip-hop isn't intentionally sexist, but that doesn't mean it isn't and can't be sexist at times.

But, does everyone else? No.

People down play female MCs all the time by saying they are the best in the female rap game when many of those same female rappers are the best in the game period.
