Celeb News: Ani Difranco, PhD, on record labels and wiping butts

Shortly after Ani DiFranco answered the phone for our interview last week she was interrupted by a familiar sound.

"Could you repeat that?" she asks following one of my questions. "Sorry, there's a baby crying in the background here."

The interruption isn't unfamiliar for DiFranco, who had her second child just more than a year ago. Her first came in 2007 and the foray into motherhood sparked a new chapter in her life that includes a "step back" from artistic ventures and a focus on family, she says.

"I used to just get to play guitar and read and think deep thoughts," she says. "Now I'm wiping butts. All day I'm wiping butts."

DiFranco grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. where she first took an interest in folk music.

She got her first guitar when she was nine years old and was quickly enveloped by the local folk scene. By 15 she was playing Buffalo bars thanks to "secret arrangements" with owners. By 16 she had her own apartment and was essentially an "emancipated minor."

That early clarity, she says, helped shape her views on the world and her vocal stances on women's issues.

DiFranco released her first album on her own record label, Righteous Babe Records, in 1990. In the 24 years since, she's never signed with a major label, though she says there were days when it was tempting.

"I was tempted. Every day for 10 years I was tempted," she says. "It was a long and scrappy existence, living out of a car. But I would definitely do it the same. It was mine."

Red Letter Year would have been better without the synthesized vocals and repetitive tracks. Which Side You was a bit messy but it was better than many other 2012 releases.

However, there were no lies in your other observation
