Winter Soldier does reference the first movie a lot, I'd suggest watching it after the second one if you get a chance to.

Just watched it. I think all I needed to know about the First Avenger was explained. Definitely watching it though.

Really good movie! Excellent plot, really reminded me of X Men: First Class by portraying their characters' humanity and vulnerability through their past.
