Pop radio stations play the music that is popular, and I am pretty sure that they use things like the iTunes chart, the Hot 100 and other stations' playlists to determine what is going to be popular. Not all stations are about giving chances to indie songs.

And yet, if you read this thread, you'll see that many other artists' record companies (that's a key point) have done and will continue to do the same. Not that it matters anyway, many stations were playing Birthday before the confectionary goods were rolled out and they will continue to long after the last crumbs have been gobbled up. Sending a cake or two to give thanks for support isn't illegal, it's smart. Other record companies should get out their notepads and maybe they'll get a couple of Dark Horses themselves.
