This past week, Coldplay unleashed upon the world what potentially could be the greatest album of 2008. As a result, Violet Hill scoots up 3 spots to #1 to score the bands second chart-topping single after Speed Of Sound spent a sole week at the summit in 2005. Additionally, Viva La Vida races up to #4 in only it's 4th week on the chart, and could potentially dethrone Violet after just one week. All this told, Kanye West is driven out of #1 after just one week.

Elsewhere, the bottom of the top 10 is becoming quite congested. But winners are beginning to emerge, as Maroon 5/Rihanna, and soon to be top 10 Rihanna will have no trouble hitting the top 5; whereas the likes of Linkin Park, Natasha Bedingfield, Death Cab For Cutie, and Weezer, may get lost in the shuffle.

Big(ger) week in the debut department this time around. We're led off by the long-overdue debut from Offspring, whose latest album is also quite good. Also on board is the newest from Death Cab For Cutie, who are also still rising with I Will Possess Your Heart. Narrow Stairs is also a terrific album by the way. And last but not least, the ladies of Danity Kane make a belated debut with a song I can't help but hear on the weekends, Damaged, which is catchy at least for the time being.

Coldplay become the first act in the chart's history to occupy both the #1 and #2 position simultaneously. As Violet Hill spends a second week at #1, the soon-to-be huge crossover smash Viva La Vida jumps up to #2 in it's only 5th week. Chris Martin was definitely wrong in saying he didn't think the band could get any bigger. Not to be counted out is the gorgeous Rihanna, who is a dominating presence in the top 10 with her Maroon 5 duet and solo track, Disturbia. Coming closer to the top 5 is the modern era's 1000th Hot 100 #1, I Kissed A Girl, the cheeky breakthrough hit from Katy Perry.

The next big story would have to be in the debuts, as four new songs make the chart this week. First up is OneRepublic, who will try to make it a third straight #1 after hitting the top with Stop & Stare and Apologize for 3 weeks each. Next up is late bloomer Gavin DeGraw, with his first song to ever make the chart. We've also got the latest from Alicia Keys, who managed her biggest #1 on the chart with No One, and a #9 peak with Like You'll Never See Me Again. And last but certainly not least, is this year's biggest breakthrough buzz band Vampire Weekend, who see the follow-up to A-Punk, which peaked at #6, debut this week.

Coldplay retains a lock on this weeks top two positions, and although it seemed Viva was a sure bet for a quick ascent to #1, Violet Hill has remained steady and comfortably holds the pole position for a third week. Zooming into the top 5 is Summer 2008's current it-girl, Katy Perry, as the cheeky I Kissed A Girl provides a formidable challenge to the all-Chris Martin top 2. Also showing some dominating form is Rihanna, who scoots up to #4 with Maroon 5 (their best peak ever), and is also new to the top 5 with an early candidate for song of the summer, Disturbia.

Debut department is very slow this week, with the only new addition being the latest from Sam Roberts, who has only charted once before with Bridge To Nowhere (peak: #8). Another big story is the sudden resurgence of Ne Yo, who had previously peaked at #11 and fell quickly to #30. Recent UK #1 success for Closer has sparked a new interest in the song for me, and it could see a stronger second life on the chart. More importantly, the 18-spot rise to #12 breaks the previous record for largest jump in a single week, held by Bones from The Killers, which lept 14 spots from #19-5 in 2006.

After 2 weeks of having the top two spots on the chart locked up, Coldplay will just have to settle for four consecutive weeks at #1, but with two different singles. Violet Hill plunges to #5 after 3 weeks at the summit, while the universally loved Viva La Vida ascends to #1 scoring the band their third overall #1 on the chart. They are also the first act to top the chart consecutively, with two different singles. Up to #2 is Katy Perry, who had an exceptionally flirtacious performance on SYTYCD last night. Rihanna also remains a presence in the top 5, with two entries on the rise.

Two debuts this week - both in the rock department. First up is from Staind, with the relatively safe, but still strong lead single from their forthcoming album. And trying to best their relatively tame peaks of the past, Theory Of A Deadman is on board again with their catchy latest.

Katy Perry knocks Coldplay from #1 after the band scored four consecutive weeks at #1 with two different singles. Rihanna and Chris Brown pose immediate threats in the top 5, while Staind and Theory Of A Deadman are this weeks biggest gainers.

Three debuts fill up the new entry department this week. The first is from Mobile, with their immediately infectious new track, which looks to score similar success to 2006's Out Of My Head, which peaked at #1 for 2 weeks. Next up is Weezer, with their latest, as they are also no strangers to top 5/10 success. And last but not least is the latest from The Stills, who have only charted once and semi-misfired with a #16 peak. But they are truly great band, despite the non-representative chart showings.
