I was on the lines of doing something like this (if you don't have Facebook....)
On the bottom of the screen to the right you can go online or offline (like Invisible mode here on ATRL) and to the left of that is Notifications (like if you got new messages, comments, etc.) and to the left of that is all yoru online friends.
Then to the way left is the actual chat. You can see it where they are talking to each other. Neat?
