It's just acceptance is more now than it was 50 years ago.

I don't think they will surpass the straights,
I guess around 10% of people have always been gay, but in previous centuries due to being ostracized less people admitted it, but now people are less afraid to come out of the closet.

A lot of people that were gay in the past used to pretend they were straight. Even some gay people today do it, but more gay people are open about it these days since it's more accepted.
