She's actually a bit less successful overall, though clearly Come On Over is individually bigger than any single Britney record.

Britney has been longer in the game... but I dont think her status in 2008 (9 years into her career. The same as Rihanna is right now) is as big as Rihanna is now.
Rihanna has the GP appeal. Britney has her nitche just stuck in the gay scene.
Her recent album sales show she is a non factor in the music industry atm

Lies. Rihanna wishes to have all the attention Britney had back in 2004-2009. Rihanna does not have better videos. She has decent but not good videos, even though I love them. Britney has decent tour grosses, she isn't exactly touring right now and despite the Femme Fatale being a huge fail. All Rihanna has is single sales. Let's not get into the impact discussion, 'cause Rihanna WILL never have the impact Britney had in the music industry.
Just cause Rihanna is currently more successful, it doesn't mean she's bigger than Britney. For example, Katy Perry is getting lots of success out of her latest album PRISM, but that doesn't mean she's been more impactful or has had a bigger career than Rihanna (and she already has 10 #1s on Billboard, three more to go to tie Rihanna in this area). Rihanna will be a BIG legend, she is an icon already, but I am pretty sure she will remain relevant in 10 or 15 more years, while Britney will rather stay home taking care of her babies, which are the most important persons in her world, her career is now second or tenth, who knows.

It's cute that you're hiding behind Rihanna to drag Britney though.

Britney Spears...She spawned so many clones (Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, etc.), #1 celebrity perfume line of all time, millions sold, etc..
She had HIAM, TTWE, IWG, and S&S this decade and those songs were HUGE.

I love Rihanna but Britney is the only answer.

Rihanna has great videos too though. I'd definitely say Britney's had more impact but I'd argue that the average Rihanna video is higher quality in terms of effort, cinematography, visuals...

Media attention? where were you betweent 2001 & 2008 when even Beyoncé (the media Queen) couldn't revalize with the Princess of Pop
|
This is true. I agree Britney dominated media attention more than Rihanna ever has (she had a bigger peak for sure) BUT it seems likely Rihanna will be relevant in the public eye much longer.
Overall Britney's peak was just huge and so Britney is the obvious answer to the poll. However Rihanna's longevity could make her career more impressive. We will have to wait and see.

Britney for now..
Rihanna will surpass her if her success continues
Britney has done nothing since Toxic, she had a BIGGER PEAK and she has had some influence I will give her that BUT she lack's longevity that is what makes a Legend. Rihanna is also somewhat more respected in the industry and public eye
We also con''t compare album sales and thing's like that britney came out in the 90s

We're not comparing sales here.
and um, Everytime? Gimme More? Piece of Me? Womanizer? Circus? If U Seek Amy? Hold it Against Me? Till the World Ends? I Wanna Go? Work Bitch? All of these were hits.
Hell even Criminal charted inside the top 5 of 20+ countries.
I don't know where your info is coming from but it's total ********.
Lacks longevity now bitch. The good sis had a 6 year reign on top from 1998-2004. Had all the attention in the world in 2005-2008. Released a comeback album in 2008 which went on to sell 4 Million copies not to mention having one of the biggest grossing tour EVER with The Circus Starring Britney Spears. Broke her radio record with TTWE then broke it again with IWG. Only the second female artist to have a #1 in three different decades.
If that's doing nothing then I'm ****ing frozen in my room.
In ALL accounts, she was IN the spotlight for 11 years straight. That's absolutely not NO LONGEVITY. Britney remains the longest running peak for a top tier girl in today's generation and her peak was for 6 years. SIX WHOLE YEARS without someone coming CLOSE.
I don't know where y'all got this no longevity ******** but that is completely misleading information and y'all might want to review your sources.

Success-wise, Rihanna definitely.
More successful albums, more WW hit singles, more global and bigger longetivity.
Impact-wise or event-wise Britney, but she's about to be surpassed by Rihanna.

Barbra hasn't, Tina hasn't, Janet hasn't. Am I missing someone or are you just trying to both discredit Britney and make her fanbase look delusional when there are solid numbers to back up what I said? Even if I remove the "living" part, only Whitney gets added to that list. Even if I mean of either sex or acts of any number, since I know I did forget to convey full context there, only MJ, arguably Elton, and ABBA fit into the "pop star" sector (and have outsold her). The Beatles don't, really. Elvis doesn't. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd don't. ACDC, Queen, and the Rolling Stones don't. So what on earth am I left to "wonder why" about due to my post?

Let them KNOW

Since "Toxic," Britney has sold over 20M albums WW, which is more than 2/3 of Rihanna's total album sales.
Also, we can compare album sales from ANY point using TEAs. These started getting used officially in 2008/2009 so there is no reason for so many people in this thread to discount them.
Britney's success lasted from 1998-early 2013. That's 15 years. Rihanna's career has lasted 9 years. How can Rihanna have more longevity so far when her career isn't even as long as Britney's success streak?

Not a Beyonce stan praising Rihanna's album sales I have seen it all.
The fact of the matter is that Britney Spears has two albums (BOMT and OIDIA) that sold more copies in the U.S. alone than Rihanna's best-selling album (GGGB) has sold WW. Rihanna is not competition for Britney.

It's been 9 years and Rihanna still hasn't hit the half-way mark for Britney's career totals, yet. If she was consistent, it would take another 9 years that were exactly as successful as her first 9 years just to be on the same field as Britney How do you believe she can manage it in just 5 years?

Let's be real here, in terms of sales and sales revenue she still wouldn't even be there, she'd basically need nine more Loud eras.
