Out of the 4 songs I have to choose from, I’ll send in the one I’ve never used because, honestly, it’s far from being among the best songs on the album and wouldn’t help me to get through this game: Body Ache. There wasn’t a single round it could’ve been my best choice, even on the “worst song round” I had a better option (Chillin’ With You). My biggest problem with Body Ache is that it doesn’t go anywhere, the lyrics are about dancing ‘til your body ache while flirting wildly with someone in the club, but the song refrains from jumping off to somewhere this exciting, the beat never explodes. Even Til It’s Gone, which isn’t about going wild in the club, has this explosive climax. Talking about the beat, will.i.am used one very similar to Scream & Shout and almost all of his songs, not even David Guetta was capable to do something different. In the middle of big club-bangers (Work Bitch and Til It’s Gone) and some instrospective lyrics (Alien and Passenger), Body Ache doesn’t contribute much to the album and is only a good fit for an open-ended round like this, because I can write an essay saying how I feel about it, I don’t necessarily need to try to fit it into a theme.

Save Me

This whole game, I’ve been waiting for the right moment to submit ‘Save Me’, the penultimate track of Making Mirrors, and that moment has finally come. Making Mirrors is largely an album about examining yourself (and the world) with a critical eye, and making peace with the fact that you’re not always going to like what you see. But after song after song about his inability to make a positive change (Eyes Wide Open), his habit of letting people down (Giving Me a Chance) and his crippling insecurity (Smoke and Mirrors), Gotye finally realizes that he’s so perpetually self-critical that he had forgotten how to love himself… and his lover leaves him as a result. And that’s what Save Me is about. It’s a stirring, cathartic epiphany, the moral to end the story. But the context is truly what gives the song its power, since it comes after you’ve finished hearing Gotye verbally dissect himself for a dozen or so tracks. That’s why I was saving it for the late game; I wanted you to hear (most of) the rest of the album first. I would have submitted it last round, but alas, it was technically released as a single in Australia.

The song I decided to use for this round was "Givin Em' What They Love" featuring the one and only… Prince! I have been waiting to use this for a long time now as it is by far my favorite song on the album, and this round was just the right moment to do so. The incredibly fierce funk-rock jam is her most attitude-filled song since The ArchAndroid's "Come Alive", and features some guitar playing from Prince as the two screech to each other with an amazing chemistry. Lyrically, the song talks about her simply "giving you what you love", or giving the public what they love by playing her music. The song even has some lesbian hinting lyrics in the song's outro, with one line saying "she was looking at me for some undercover love" which is noteworthy since Jane has never really addressed her sexuality in any of her songs before this. Overall, the song is just a swagger filled explosion of energy, and by far the best thing Prince has done in years.
