Choose The Album, Then a Song 5: Round 10!
LADIES & GENTLEMAN... CHOOSE THE ALBUM, THEN A SONG IS BACK!
The Game is back on!
Here we are! Early update! Who would have thought that? It only shows the dedication of everyone to the game, thank you!
We're so close to the elimination and to aliviate the pressure I decided to give you a kind of a 'free mind' round and go for (almost) whatever you wanted. One of you will leave in three days and we'll find the top 4!
As for now, let's find your choices!
THE RULES
By joining the cast of this game, you're agreeing with the rules:
1. DURING THE TIME TO VOTE, ALL THE CONTESTANTS MUST VOTE (OTHERWISE YOU'RE PENALIZED);
2. NO CONTESTANT MAY ASK FANS TO SAVE THEIR ALBUM;
3. ALL CONTESTANTS MUST DELIVER THEIR ENTRY IN TIME, OTHERWISE THEY'RE ELIMINATED (if you need extra time, you need to let me know);
4. A SONG CAN ONLY BE USED THREE TIMES THROUGHOUT THE CHALLENGE;
5. ONCE A SONG IS USED, IT GETS BLOCKED FOR THE NEXT THREE ROUNDS;
6. EVERYONE IS ALLOWED TO VOTE (INSIDERS+OUTSIDERS);
7. EVERYONE HAS TO READ/LISTEN THE ENTRIES BEFORE VOTING;
8. ONE VOTE PER PERSON.
THE JUDGING PANEL
1. Pedro
2. boyonce
3. Inner Insanity
4. VDK
ROUND TEN

1. collin - Madonna - American Life: X-Static Process

X-Static Process
This vulnerable, raw ballad stands alone in Madonna's discography. The song was remixed and featured in Madonna and Steven Klein's collaborative artwork, which many deem one of Madonna's career highlights. Sonically, the song features only raw vocals and acoustic guitar: that's something one doesn't expect from Madonna. Included on an album like American Life, full of social commentary and risk-taking production, this song is an oddball. That's why I decided to use it for this round. It's not only a stand-out in its uniqueness on American Life, but in Madonna's career as a whole. Additionally, the song is not necessarily easy to relate to, because it's an autobiographical song about Madonna herself. It's purely Madonna. It doesn't really fit anywhere - that's what makes it special.

that I was special, too" |

There wasn’t a single round it could’ve been my best choice, even on the “worst song round” I had a better option (Chillin’ With You). My biggest problem with Body Ache is that it doesn’t go anywhere, the lyrics are about dancing ‘til your body ache while flirting wildly with someone in the club, but the song refrains from jumping off to somewhere this exciting, the beat never explodes. Even Til It’s Gone, which isn’t about going wild in the club, has this explosive climax. Talking about the beat, will.i.am used one very similar to Scream & Shout and almost all of his songs, not even David Guetta was capable to do something different. In the middle of big club-bangers (Work Bitch and Til It’s Gone) and some instrospective lyrics (Alien and Passenger), Body Ache doesn’t contribute much to the album and is only a good fit for an open-ended round like this, because I can write an essay saying how I feel about it, I don’t necessarily need to try to fit it into a theme.

3. Chill Bill - Gotye - Making Mirrors: Save Me

Save Me
This whole game, I’ve been waiting for the right moment to submit ‘Save Me’, the penultimate track of Making Mirrors, and that moment has finally come. Making Mirrors is largely an album about examining yourself (and the world) with a critical eye, and making peace with the fact that you’re not always going to like what you see. But after song after song about his inability to make a positive change (Eyes Wide Open), his habit of letting people down (Giving Me a Chance) and his crippling insecurity (Smoke and Mirrors), Gotye finally realizes that he’s so perpetually self-critical that he had forgotten how to love himself… and his lover leaves him as a result. And that’s what Save Me is about. It’s a stirring, cathartic epiphany, the moral to end the story. But the context is truly what gives the song its power, since it comes after you’ve finished hearing Gotye verbally dissect himself for a dozen or so tracks. That’s why I was saving it for the late game; I wanted you to hear (most of) the rest of the album first. I would have submitted it last round, but alas, it was technically released as a single in Australia.

The song I decided to use for this round was "Givin Em' What They Love" featuring the one and only… Prince! I have been waiting to use this for a long time now as it is by far my favorite song on the album, and this round was just the right moment to do so. The incredibly fierce funk-rock jam is her most attitude-filled song since The ArchAndroid's "Come Alive", and features some guitar playing from Prince as the two screech to each other with an amazing chemistry. Lyrically, the song talks about her simply "giving you what you love", or giving the public what they love by playing her music. The song even has some lesbian hinting lyrics in the song's outro, with one line saying "she was looking at me for some undercover love" which is noteworthy since Jane has never really addressed her sexuality in any of her songs before this. Overall, the song is just a swagger filled explosion of energy, and by far the best thing Prince has done in years.

"4 in the Morning"
When looking back on my entries for this game, I was completely shocked I didn't use my favorite song from The Sweet Escape, 4 in the Morning. It's literally Pop perfection, which makes me so upset that I haven't used it until now. It wasn't submitted because it truly never had a round 'made' for it, and would've gone unappreciated in rounds such as 'Ride' or 'Whenever, Wherever'. With such an open-ended theme this round, I found this was the perfect platform to display 4ITM's vitality to the album, with such honest lyrics and a sugar-coated, heartbreaking production. A song like this deserves to be heard, and I'm glad this round allowed that. |

Wow, y'all did AMAZING with this round It's so so so hard to choose, I wish I didn't have to...
SAVE: Gwen - Amazing choice, it's a great song and unfitting of most rounds. I see why you chose it.
Close Call: Britney - Love that you chose the WORST one, a song still unfitting of any round. Amazing.
OFF: Gotye - I literally do not want to vote you off but have no choice. U-G-H.
OFF: Janelle - A good song choice, probably, but I would've liked to understand why you chose it more.

SAVE:
---> Gotye (totally agree with you)
Runner-up: Madonna (your writing is incredible, I dont save you simply because i prefer Gotye's song)
Middle: Gwen (excellent entry, but i just simply prefer others' essays)
OFF:
---> Janelle your judgment toward the song is right, it's a good song, but i can't relate it to why the song should be used in this round
---> Britney (this should have gone to Worst Song theme round instead of Chilin With You), now that you reminded us in the essay, also similarly to the above reason about its being un-relatable to the theme, but your essay seems more persuasive than Janelle's at least

@collin & Simon: The reason I used the song was because I didn't want it to get wasted since I like it so much, and because I figured there might not be another round where I could use it. I guess I didn't get that point across well enough.
