Alot of couples don't feel the need to get hitched because they feel as if they title of husband and wife isn't going to change the dynamic of the relationship or the titles comes with too much responsibility or restrict certain freedoms. Other reasons include religion and tradition. alot of couples today don't even have titles in a standard relationship. Should we ditch the idea of titles and marriage for a more "progressive" society?

I am not into marriage at all.

I think in it's place we should be able to legally assign partnership to whomever we want whenever so that people can still be able to have some of the benefits that marriage does give. But marriage itself I feel is put on a pedestal and made into something it doesn't need to be. Weddings themselves are clichés and the idea of needing to get married to start a family or in general is dated religious stuff we frankly don't need.

If we are able to opt in/out of partnership easily by just going to a governmental office, less pressure will be put on marriages, divorces will be less serious, etc. But this won't happen because weddings are a multimillion dollar industry and people are made to feel that they need to have one with their strapless princess dress and all that.

I want to get married but I can easily see why people don't.

Take my grandparents for example: been together for over 40 years now, live in separate houses, share a dog. Both have separate families but they meet together on holidays and enjoy each others company. They live their lives but still check in with each other every other day when they aren't going out on cruises or vacations. Sounds like a good relationship imho.

I don't really understand the point of marriage beyond getting medical benefits and being able to visit your spouse in the hospital etc. That's the only reason I would even consider getting married. Maybe it's because I've never been married but I don't understand how it makes the relationship stronger, that's a mental thing not something that can be changed with a ring. And I hate how people are looked down upon for having kids out of wedlock like that automatically makes their relationship unstable or something. Or how people think that once you've been together for a certain amount of time that it's 'time to get married' and if they don't, then people think the guy won't propose and the poor girl is getting strung along but there are girls (like me) who don't have interest in marriage. I hate how marriage is seen as the ultimate form of a relationship and what you should be aiming for. And divorces can be so messy, and can last for over a year just trying to get it finalized. Whereas if you weren't married and broke up, you wouldn't have to go through the court system like that to move on from the relationship.

No, it's a perfectly applicable form of legal union that provides benefits and rights accordingly. Marriage is both a social and a legislative institution and the benefits and drawbacks of both aspects must be considered. Sure, if I get married the relationship for me might not change interpersonally, but the same may not be true for others and the relationship DOES improve in legal status and flexibility. Besides, we don't have just one singular culture that can do away with marriage - it's a very important institution in many religions and cultures.

I don't know. I personally don't feel like marriage is something I will necessarily "have to" do. If it feels right, then yeah, sure. But if it doesn't, I wouldn't want to force it. That's why divorce happens.

I definitely went to get married, which includes having a nice ceremony (probably not in a church though, especially since it will be a gay wedding ).

Only true reason to get married is going all out on the ceremony and legal vices/opportunities. Other than that, it basically puts pressure on your relationship. You cannot separate for good without legally filing. It eventually makes it into a "damn I can't leave him/her out of my own will now" type of thing. You'd be surprised how many marriages work just because of the title aka they feel they are forced to because the law is involved in your relationship.

I, for one, WANT to get married one day because I am a hopeless romantic. But I see no purpose in it unless you know 100% you want to spend the rest of your life with this person and want benefits and can also handle the pressure. I don't even know if I'm answering the question at this point lol.

I agree because of legal issues surrounding custody of the children, health insurance, etc. But it does seem silly to only be able to enjoy those privileges if you get married. Marriage is personal and individual to every couple. It's not like a driver's licence. There's a mix of both legality and emotions involved. So it's something that can benefit you, but if you are not wanting to get married or have any other notion against it, it is unfair to be excluded from these things because of the emotional level.

The whole marital system needs to change tbh. Everything is so costly and troublesome. I needs to be simplified. Like, getting a divorce is such a hassle. It shouldn't be, it creates even more tension between people. It's just a money making institution now and it's gross.
