and signing to a major label means nothing if you don't bring in revenue which Selena doesn't do a lot of - you just admitted that Miley wouldn't have gotten anything if WCS didn't smash. with Stars Dance being a pitifully low seller, labels aren't just gonna invest in her just because she has ~4 2x platinum singles.

Controversy doesn't sell music but it sure does promote it. I don't think it's a bad thing but it's a powerful crutch. Look what Demi's rehab controversy did for her career & Miley's new "crazy behavior" did for hers. WCS smashed after the music video released which a lot of people were shocked by. Skyscraper became Demi's biggest single at the time when it was released post-rehab. You really can't deny that it has a big effect on sales & is the ultimate promotion.
Also, I'm sure labels will jump on signing her based on her name alone. Labels are all about making money & it's going to be much easier for them to build up an already famous artist over someone irrelevant. Her singles with each era have continued to get bigger & her potential has really shown with C&GI & Stars Dance. I'm sure a major label would see that shedding her super clean image would be a big step for her into the pop world which is something HWR probably isn't willing to do. Just like Miley with CBT, HWR sexed Selena up a little bit this era but only enough to still appeal to younger fans.
I will admit her production on SD was a bigger scale than her previous albums but just imagine the quality if she had a label with connections with major pop producers like Max, Luke, etc.
