I was just in a heated debate with some guy who called my taste in music gay. I wasn't offended or anything, because I'm way past that point, but wtf? The stereotyping was REAL

Now I'm out and have no problem blasting who ever I please out of my speakers, but it wasn't always like this for me.

This is directed at those who are still in the closet.
Have you ever been accused of having a gay taste in music?
Have you been called gay for liking a certain song or artist?
Do you feel as though you can't be as open about a song/artist you love because it's considered to be "gay"?

I know when I was in the closet, I was also a closeted Bey stan that would bop to Bey when no one was around because I didn't want to be called a "faqqot" when I bopped to songs like Check On It back in 2006
I know it's silly to think that way, but I was so naive. I was also openly fond of Britney when she debuted, I was 8-10 years old, It was before I was even aware of my sexuality, yet I was made fun of by the other boys at school because of it... It could be classified as bullying even.

What makes music gay anyway? Is there music that is "straight" for that matter?

I've experienced this. Some people just aren't open-minded enough.

Pop is a genre that's more appealing to gay men and straight girls because of the large amount of female singers and boybands. It's the genre with most acceptance and support for the gay community. I see rock and its variations and trance music as "straight" music. I say this based in what my brother listens. He hates pop music.

But today it's hard to define things completely, since we tend to listen to a large variety of genres. We're more open-minded I guess. I'm jamming to Gorillaz right now and I just listened to Born This Way in its entirety, lol.

Oh girl, I can't even enjoy listening to pop girls in public without people asking "why do you have gaga in in your ipod? "

I was so embarrassed of anyone finding out that I stanned for Britney back in the day.

To be honest, I've just never gotten what "this music is gay" or "this music is for the real niqqas" even means. I mean, at the end of the day, whatever sounds nice mehn!

I get this a lot too. My female friend agreed when I asked her if I have a taste of a 13 year old girl.

I think everyone that listens to pop music and specifically pop girls and is a male will be classified as gay. I mean, if you tell anyone you're a Gaga, Bey or Britney stan they will assume you're gay (and honestly it's true 95% of the time) but that's just the way things are, not a bad thing.

Probably for Gaga and Britney, but I think that percentage is way lower for Bey.

And I totally agree, I hesitated to put Bey. Rihanna and Bey are kind of the only ones who have more straight appeal and aren't exactly considered gay music.

Definitely. I am open with my love for Bey and no one says anything because everyone loves her where I live.

I'll just say that probably 90+% of men who listen to Lady Gaga are not straight.

My peers make fun of my Britney stanning. But they listen to Flo Rida and Pitbull calling it the **** so HA

ive never been accused why would i? maybe people try to tell you indirectly that they assume you are gay.but gay taste in music? stupid

I think this applies when you're a teenager, where the need to distinguish some sort of masculinity is rampant to cover up insecurities that come with being that age.

As you get older, you realize none of that matters and become more open to other genres especially pop, which a vast majority love and secretly bop to.
