I'm not saying there are NO smart Americans, or NO smart American TV shows, but for the most part American humour is dumbed-down for mainstream appeal. This has been subverted or undermined on occasion - The Simpsons being the best example, because it appealed to the 90% of Americans who appear to have had lobotomies performed on them immediately after birth while also making a fantastic satirical comment on American culture at large. Unfortunately The Simpsons has also been dumbed-down, so that's that.

But for the most part the best things are shunned in favour of something stupid - Letterman getting whooped by Leno, 30 Rock being repeatedly punched down by How I Met Your Mother, Chelsea Handler being more popular than Amy Sedaris, etc. Like...

Is it only on in Belfast? I don't feel like driving three hours and across the border. Went to the Titanic exhibition when there was that whole thing about the damn city flags or whatever and went through a rough patch on the way up. Turned me off going up there on my own a bit.

The Simpsons had such a good thing going. They really let it go.
