But I mean Montreal is 50/50 and the founding city of Canada, Canada itself was originally wholly French, Quebec historically was the founder of Canada with Ontario, it's like New York getting out of the USA does not make sense

What would be wrong with New York having independence, if it's population supported the idea? Just because you founded something doesn't mean you have to see it out to the very end, especially not if you feel that you would be better off represented by people with the same culture and ideals as yourself rather than people who have no idea what's best for you.
Obviously Quebec doesn't yet support independence, but if they ever do 'But you founded Canada!!!' is probably one of the worst anti-independence arguments you can give.
Reminds me of the Better Together campaign 'You've been part of the UK for 300 years now, might as well keep going tbh'- completely ignores why some people support the cause and makes it into a 'I don't like change!' argument

Well, we won Quebec. The French lost. It's now our territory, seperation would be like stealing our land from us. It's Canada's land, it belongs to all Canadians now.

Scotland should separate, of course the English took their independence by FORCE and treated them horribly for hundreds of years. If they don't vote for independence I will lose all respect for the entire country.

So what? The country is not independent... lots of places were better off economically under British rule, but that didn't stop them from wanting their independence. I don't know why anyone would want to keep licking the boots of their English masters... I mean unless they're only after dem coins and don't care about their country's heritage.

It's more like 42% of the Quebecers thought they had no choice but to vote strategically. I didn't vote strategically, I voted for my conviction and values. I think Québec Solidaire is an amazing choice. Francoise David is probably one of the best leaders a political party in Quebec has had in years.
It's pathetic how the Liberals just came in ''full force''. It's not a win by any means, it's just a lost for the PQ, and Pauline Marois.
The political scene in Quebec has become ridiculous. PQ or PLQ, PQ or PLQ. These two had their chances, onto something new, please.
I'm not a french elitist, by any means, but english speaking people, that only want to speak english here are totally disrespectful (same goes with french speaking people who don't speak a word of english). I'm bilingual, I'm fluent in both, and I get really annoyed when somebody doesn't want to speak French to me. The mix of french and english culture is beautiful, and that's where the beauty of our province comes from. I hate how some people just spit on that, with no respect thinking that some french (or english people) are just pure evil for protecting hundred of years of their culture. Learn both languages and shut up.

This is exactly my point. French speakers aren't all bad and English speakers aren't all good. People need to understand this.
Since I consider myself in the "middle" (if I can say that lol), both situations can be very frustrating at times.

I'm not Canadian but I wanted the separatists to win to be honest. It would be good for the people who have been fighting for their rights for years. I do believe their rights are good now but as an independent nation they could gain so much. And do not act like the separation of Quebec threatens Canada. In fact, I believe economically it would threaten Quebec, not Canada. But I still want to see someday a new free Western nation. It is a race between Quebec and Catalonia. I am hopeful about Catalonia, but the truth is that it might never happen. At least Greenland is happening.

In the province that is right, however I do understand why some Quebecois would get annoyed that bilingualism is promoted to them and the rest of Canada is mostly anglophone. I think that's the issue. An English-speaking person will find services in his language everywhere in the country but it is harder for a French-speaking person. It's just very skewed.

A lot to read up on, the separatist party has broken all the constitutional laws (using veto) by passing reforms which force immigrants to only go to French schools. Limited all signs to be French, make the language that you speak in public French first, and limited funding to English schools. And proposed a charter to strip all religions from wearing symbols of their religion (cross necklace, hijab etc...) if you work in the public sector. They also want their own country, they're walking talking monsters.
|
I do agree that the charter is too strict and unnecessary but what is wrong about making immigrants go to French schools? Think about it, if they go to English schools and English becomes their preferred language then eventually English will become the language of the majority and French will decline. Also, the majority of the population is French-speaking so of course the funding won't be the same for English schools. Couldn't the same be argued about French schools in, I don't know....British Columbia? I just think that making French the main language is not the same as outlawing English. However some of their measures have been somewhat aggressive. I just hope that people can either learn to respect each other's linguistic rights (like Switzerland) or if not then Quebec will become independent. I don't know...

New York is a mainly anglophone city though. It's very diverse because it is a huge city but it still has this American essence.

Mmmhhh no. It seems people from Quebec have this wrong idea that French is spoken only in Quebec but that is untrue. Most provinces are bilingual, French is promoted heavily in all provinces, French immersion schools are very popular, services in French are available in most provinces, etc. French is a deep part of canada outside of québéc, most of federal employees have to be bilingual, etc. canada is skewed heavily towards French and Quebec despite French people being a minority.
