How I Met only had only couple of good seasons and the finale was HORRIBLE and ruined the whole thing. Friends even with the decline in quality was a great show from start to finish.
HIMYM isn't bad but it never hit the heights of entertainment that Friends did. The quality decline in Friends really didn't affect it that badly either.

It got better each season for me until about season 5, that was the peak for me. But the only "bad" season for me was 7 and even then it was still very good. After season 7 it got a lot better again.
right now.. after than one perfect Series Finale, i would say "How I Met Your Mother"
maybe i wouldnt say this in a month or so, but HIMYM series finale is literally one of the very best episodes of any sitcom i've seen! (contrary to the widespread disappointment )
