It's iconic as Miley's reinvention, and when she broke away from her 'Hannah Montana' past and got a newer, raunchier, more provocative image. The song itself though? I doubt people will be playing it in 30 years with everyone remembering it, like we do with 'Thriller.'

I think her VMA performance will overshadow the song itself as far as what's considered "iconic." The VMA performance stole its thunder. That's what people will remember. The song itself was more experimental than iconic. People will remember 'Blurred Lines' and 'Royals' from that time.

Well one of my tutors at university says that for something to be iconic, it has to be recognised. Going by that definition, I'd say that the music video, and Miley's VMA performance, and the song are iconic (although, I'd argue that the MV and VMA's performance are more iconic)
