Surrogacy is a third party reproduction where generally another woman provides her uterus so that a woman can have a child. Intended parents may seek a surrogacy arrangement when medical issues make pregnancy not possible or make carrying a pregnancy risky or otherwise undesirable, or because the intended parent or parents are male. Monetary compensation may or may not be involved in surrogacy arrangements. Thus the reproductive process goes beyond the traditional father-mother model. However, the third party's involvement is limited to the reproductive process and does not extend into the raising of the child.

Surrogates are generally encouraged to become emotionally detached from the fetus prior to giving birth. Although surrogate mothers generally report being satisfied with their experience as surrogates there are cases in which they are not. Some women have psychological reactions when being surrogate mothers. These include depression when surrendering the child, grief, and even refusal to release the child. After all, it's quite difficult not to develop feelings for someone growing in your womb for nine long months.

One of the bravest and most commendable acts a woman could do. I respect anyone who is willing to be that selfless for someone else.

I think it's great. For a woman to give up her body for a child that is not hers for 9 months and then give birth and make an otherwise childless couple's dream come true is amazing. I love how far the advancements in science have come to where this is now possible. I don't want bio kids of my own but sometimes I think it'd be nice to be a surrogate for a couple that is having trouble conceiving and give them that gift of life. I know that it can be difficult to give up the child at birth but I really don't have interest in children or babies so I don't think I'd have as rough a time as somebody who does like kids and was a surrogate.

For women who are unfortunately afflicted with infertility (or who were born with frail reproductive systems), surrogacy is a blessing.

And, now, more than ever, are used to help gay couples conceive.

I know you probably don't mean it like this, but I really dislike the obsession a lot of gay couples have with wanting "their own" kids, as in blood related, because it feels like they're implying adopted kids wouldn't be as important or would be loved less since they aren't literally part of them. I just find it selfish that couples do this when there's already so many kids in the world that need a home/family. Then again that's flawed logic seeing as it's not wrong for straight couples to have babies themselves

So I'd never do it but obviously that's just my personal choice, I certainly don't think that other people shouldn't be allowed to do it because I wouldn't.

I mean, it's kind of an obvious answer especially in a forum with gay members. I don't see why anyone would oppose consensual surrogacy, it's an option for couples who can't have children together. Nothing too bad about it.

But it's nice to have something we can all agree on.
