I don't know why he decided to come out, there are so many actors/singers, etc who are Gay/Bi/Lesbian, their families and friends know, but they don't feel the need to come out and tell the whole world.
He had a better chance of being successful again if he stayed in the closet.

Not really, coming out is the best thing he ever did.
According to the comments I'm reading from people who were teens/early 20's during NSYNC's peak he was a "horrible singer" and had a horrible uninteresting personality.
and everyone knew he was gay
