Luckily for all you music fans, Ms. Azalea does not disappoint. The New Classic is packed with fifteen (yes, you read correctly, fifteen) bass-hitting, beat-bumping, cleverly lyrical hip-hop/pop tracks that can only be described in a nutshell by her braggadocious (yet well suited) album title. Tracks like “Goddess”– where the hook is literally so catchy that any guy would mistakenly start chanting, “bow down to a goddess”—and “Lady Patra” featuring Mavado shows how her unique lyrical ability and signature sound can grace just about any musical genre, including reggae. With features from other female up-and-comers like Rita Ora (who lends her sultry vocals to “Black Widow”) and Charli XCX (who is heard on the first single “Fancy”), Ms. Azalea keeps her collaborations to a minimum, with only five on the album.

Iggy Azalea is finally having her moment.
In the dimly lighted The Raven filled of industry insiders like Sway, Peter Rosenberg and LowKey, Iggy held her private listening session for The New Classic. The 23-year old Aussie rapper has stuffed her resume since winning the People’s Champ for the 2012 XXL Freshman Class. Solo covers for Complex, Nylon, among others. MTV’s Artist To Watch. Hustle Gang affiliate that strengthen the relationship with her mentor T.I. The list goes on.
Last night felt like Iggy’s patience has paid off. For most of 2013, we’ve heard her talk about her major label debut, with several false starts in securing a release date. Singles like “Murda Bizness” and “Millionaire Misfits” off her Glory EP failed to build hype, but she got right back to work. Now, anthems such as “Change Your Life” featuring T.I. and “Fancy” with Charlie XCX have generated a lot of attention and raised her profile tremendously. It’s only right that Iggy’s independent grind coupled with a strong label push has given her the necessary platform to soar.
From 7 PM on, more people were packed into the small space as Iggy finally arrived to kick off The New Classic. After a short intro from Def Jam executives, the DJ played through the album in full. Instead of Iggy running through every record, she wanted to everyone to have some fun. Mixed drinks of Ketel One Vodka and Red Bull fittingly titled The New Classic and Fancy were served in copious amounts, which elevated moods from head nodding to certain songs to doing the pull up dance for all of them. “Fancy” sounded crisp in a club environment (T.I. even tells us that he personally chose it as the next single). Other records like “New Bitch” is an electronic hip-hop record that’s both bossy and fun.
She brings down the tempo with “100,” a boastful track about demanding respect over an acoustic backdrop. “Impossible Is Nothing” is another highlight that tells her heartfelt story of never throwing in the towel to pursue her dreams. The album rounds out with dubstep madness in “Black Widow” featuring an invigorating hook by Rita Ora, and a reggae-flavored track with Mavado called “Lady Patra.”
