It's because Apple support devices almost five years old with the latest OS. As long as the iOS is the latest, any app can run on the device. But if the app is too powerful for the old device, it crashes.
On Android, older phones are hardly supported and if they are, and the apps are too powerful, you get a message telling you:
So on Android, if an app is too powerful for your device, it will either tell you on the Play Store or when you open the app, in which you can delete it.
iOS support older devices, so the app will open if you have the latest iOS but if you don't you get a message like this:
That's why iOS has a higher crash rate. And if you look, iOS 6 was much bigger than iOS 7 because they still supported the ancient 3Gs.
But the reason why Android is less is because they won't even let you install the app if the hardware is too old, or the app won't even open if it's not compatible. It doesn't get the chance to crash.
