Aaliyah never peaked in the 90's, she was just becoming huge which is why she is so heavily commemorated. Same with Selena tbh the biggest tragedy was that they were young beautiful women who meant a lot to their respective communities and were just about to break into the mainstream world (and with Aaliyah not only mainstream music which she already kind of did, but as a movie star)

Judging by what they both had planned to do before their deaths I would say Aaliyah not just because of music but also her breaking into the movie world and being a fashion icon.

Her music super popular even today, and because of the movie she is still one of the most, if not the most remembered artist in Spanish music, ever.

Aaliyah though was starting to breakthrough more though, and was landing movie deals on top of it. Also she had a number 1 hit, and huge hits such as Try Again, One in a Million and Are You That Somebody.

Selena's movie no shade is probably one of the biggest highlights to her career. I don't even know how well Mexico really accepted her to be honest anyways though. Maybe someone can post chart receipts? To my knowledge she was only getting huge to Mexican-Americans, and the Latin market was still breaking through even in the 90's until the late 90s boom with enrique and ricky martin.

Most of you here don't even do your research, you're just going off of todays her death anniversary and most of all of us know her movie.

Aaliyah had more hits and sales overall. Selena seems to of only had one number 1 hit. And it was in the US latin charts. I don't see records of her anywhere in Latin America.

There were far bigger mexican latina stars before and even after selena. She was helping latinas break through in America and in a way due to her death, Jennifer Lopez did just that

EDIT: Well I didn't notice it said 90's. Well I guess selena,but ONLY due to her movie boost. Aaliyah only had two albums then. Her self titled which put her more worldwide and way in the lead wasn't until 2001.
