Do you even know what Tejano music is?
It's origins don't come from Mexico sweetie. It comes from Texas LOL!.It's main influence was American.
Most of you here don't even do your research, you're just going off of todays her death anniversary and most of all of us know her movie.
Aaliyah had more hits and sales overall. Selena seems to of only had one number 1 hit. And it was in the US latin charts. I don't see records of her anywhere in Latin America.
ALSO the madonna of Mexico is gloria trevi boo.
There were far bigger mexican latina stars before and even after selena. She was helping latinas break through in America and in a way due to her death, Jennifer Lopez did just that
EDIT: Well I didn't notice it said 90's. Well I guess selena, but ONLY due to her movie boost. Aaliyah only had two albums then. Her self titled which put her more worldwide and way in the lead wasn't until 2001.
