I don't think the op is being disrespectful at all. I don't think Aaliyah was all that huge while she was alive as far as sells or pop culture impact is concerned. The fact that so many young artist like Nsync, Christiana, Britney and Destiny's Child were dominating pop and urban culture is the reason her death impacted so many young people. So young and beautiful and even talented. Her last album was a futuristic urban masterpiece. It only got the shine that it rightfully deserved after her passing. No one knows where she would be career wise had she lived.

The things people say about 'Beyoncé wouldn't have a career' isn't true though. Didn't Beyoncé debut successfully in 1997 and became even more successful in the years following while Aaliyah was still alive.

Only crazed Aaliyah fans and true Bey haters say such foolishness. Aaliyah was on her way to movie stardom. She had just signed to do all the Matrix movies.

Not in the slightest. She was a true icon, she changed the game and she's one of the very few artists of her generation to have a flawless back catalogue. And she was barely a teenager when she started out. I can't even imagine how far she would have gone had she not passed away just when her career was going to the next level.

Aaliyah started the teen r'n'b star movement, so if it wasn't for her, Brandy and Monica wouldn't exist. Also, Aaliyah, 13 years after she passed away, is currently more remembered, celebrated and respected than Monica and Brandy combined although they're both still releasing music.

So, you're implying that all dead artists are automatically more relevant than their contemporaries who are still alive. I can name 10 urban artists that passed away and are not remembered today unfortunately. Don't even get me started on artists from other genres. There are only two categories of artists that are remembered long after their death : legends, like MJ, Elvis and Whitney and upcoming artists that were epxected to become superstars just before they passed away, like Notorious B.I.G. and Aaliyah.
